Motorists, Equity & Unity Party

The Motorists, Equity & Unity Party was launched to represent the Motorist in the UK.   We have put forward many suggestions for improving the means for dealing with the cause of accidents including 3-lane alternative overtaking roads - a more demanding driving licence for those driving on the motorways - a 5 yearly medical for those reaching the age of 65 in order to ensure that the driver has adequate sight and reaction times (the latter measures are not to take away licences, but to limit the use of vehicles in some circumstances, where driving on ordinary roads would be in order.   Motorway driving can be very demanding and the driver needs to be fully alert at all times)
There are many methods to solve the increasing traffic congestion in our towns, villages, and unmodified two-way “A” roads.    A visit to our Campaigns section will show the solution to the congestion in the centre of the City of Brighton & Hove.    Unfortunately, to date, the council considered money spent on the London Road entering the town was more important than addressing the town centre problems.   The result has been additional difficulties entering the town, three-quarters of a mile further north of the city.    A bus lane serving the No. 5 bus service (one bus every 10 minutes) was not the most urgent measure required to solve the city’s problems.

We have heard much talk about Park & Ride services yet the simplest solution to the congestion entering Brighton via the London Road would be parking at the North end of Preston Park.   This would enable 200 vehicles to park at the entrance to the town and make use of the No. 5 bus service or in many cases, walk into town.   The London Road shopping centre is less than a half mile away.    Any visitors wishing to visit other parts of the town for shopping can use more than 7 other bus services passing by the London Road, plus the taxi rank at St Peter’s Church.    Why it is considered necessary to turn the town inside out in order to accommodate Park & Ride is rather a mystery.
Is Your Gas Appliance Safe ?
Deaths from Carbon Monoxide poisoning still occur despite articles in the media warning of the dangers.    Be vigilant and ensure that the flue of your gas fire has not been blocked by birds nesting or internal collapse of brickwork within the flue.

Carbon Monoxide detectors are available at reasonable cost which could well mean the difference between collecting your old age pension or making an early departure from this life.  Is it worth penny-pinching for such an important safeguard in the home.  Perhaps you could club together with your neighbours and share the cost of equipment, particularly if you live in a block of flats or bed-sitter.

The Daily Telegraph in their leader column on Tuesday, 15th November announced that the NHS have overspent by a massive £1 billion !    This, in a budget of £74.5 billion which, if put into context means that they have overspent by a massive 1.35% !    Since our inflation is said to be running at 3.5% approximately this (1.35%) doesn’t appear quite as alarming as the article tries to portray.    If we wish to reduce the burden on the NHS it doesn’t seem quite logical to recommend the reduction of taxes, this would surely only exacerbate the existing problems of the government.
The M.E. & U. Party have been and continue to recommend that the FOOD part of the NHS should be paid for, and not regarded as part of the health treatment given to patients.    If the patient was at home they would have to provide for their nutrition; why is it that we expect food to be provided free of charge ?    If the government were to adopt this measure, not only would the NHS burden be reduced, the patients would also benefit from a more attractive menu and would probably also enjoy their stay whilst in hospital !   If anything needs to be privatised then we suggest that the provision of food is an ideal area with which to begin.
Reducing the cost of the NHS
Although the Party’s emphasis is on motoring issues it would be incorrect to assume that we are a one-issue party.   Far from it.   We campaign for many issues including the N.H.S., the UN route before invading Iraq ; Education issues ; Sentencing and treatment of offenders to reduce re-offending ; Alternative methods to decide elections to make the results fairer and therefore more democratic.   Representatives of the ME & U party have a free vote on all issues outside the realm of Transport.   We will not be using Whips for other issues and therefore we claim to be more democratic than the 3 main parties.   Using whips or invoking the Parliamentary Act side-step the democratic process.

The Party feels strongly that the methods used for dealing with parking have become draconian and for this reason we are proposing a cooling-off period for overstaying at paid parking spaces - we are suggesting a fixed national charge of £10 for overstaying at a paid parking space for the first 30 minutes (this would be introduced nationally).   Stamps would be available at Post Offices to affix to the excess charge notice and posted to the appropriate Parking Control Office.    This measure would undoubtedly reduce the income to the Councils since most parking tickets are issued for arriving back late at one’s vehicle for a variety of reasons including forgetfulness.   The Party argues that a Penalty Charge of 6000% for late return (less than 30 minutes) is entirely unreasonable.   Much of the violence directed at Parking Wardens is as a result of such punitive charges.   Since the Conservative Party and the New Labour Party are not prepared to enact such changes in local council charges we have taken up the cudgel.  We need the support of the public in order to correct such abuse of Council powers.

The Party is against all irresponsible parking, particularly non-payment of parking charges but to penalise those that have paid by such harsh penalties is inexcusable.

The M.E. & U. Party continue to campaign for the completion of the A27 to Folkstone and Dover.   We are campaigning for local parking controls at reasonable cost in order to enable local businesses to compete with the superstores (own parking facilities).   The encouragement of car-sharing in order to reduce pollution and traffic congestion.
The M.E. & U. Party favour guaranteed prices for produce grown in the poorest African countries.   This would enable them to plan for a more stable future, by their own hands.
Our party has many other views on subjects from Iraq, Afghanistan to recidivism in the prison system, improved road layouts in order to reduce traffic light controls and unnecessary tailbacks.

WE ARE NOT A ONE ISSUE PARTY !

**When the Titanic hit the iceberg the priority was to get the passengers into the lifeboats.   Once the lifeboats reached the shore it was then possible to worry about any other ships in distress.   The UK, along with many other countries hit an iceberg.   It takes some time to build another Titanic and our recovery will take just as long.

Food for thought !
‘The greatest triumphs of propaganda have been accomplished, not by doing something, but by refraining from doing. Great is truth, but still greater, from a practical point of view, is silence about truth. By simply not mentioning certain subjects, by lowering what Mr. Churchill calls and “iron curtain” between the masses and such facts or arguments as the local political bosses regard as undesirable, totalitarian propagandists have influenced opinion much more effectively than they could have done by the most eloquent denunciations, the most compelling of logical rebuttals.’ —  Preface to Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World (1931)
‘We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality — judiciously, as you will — we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.’ — Senior Bush Advisor, The New York Times, October 17, 2004
